The History of Taoist Practice at Laoshan

Laoshan (Mountain of Lao), in Qingdao, is one of the sacred mountains of Taoism in China, with a long history as an important origin and practice site of Taoism in China. The history of Taoist practice at Laoshan dates back to the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD) and spans over two thousand years. According to historical records, a Taoist master named Zhang Daoling practiced at Laoshan during the Eastern Han dynasty and founded Taoism. He also cured many patients with special Taoist medicine during epidemics. His disciple Lu Xiujing established a temple at Laoshan called the "Taiqing Palace". During the Tang dynasty (618-907), the transmission of Taoism to Laoshan further developed, and many temples, Taoist temples, and Taoist schools were built at Laoshan. The Taoist culture of Laoshan not only influenced the local region but also spread to other regions of the country. During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), Liang Ruhao, the magistrate of Laoshan County, was passionate about Taoism and vigorously supported Taoism by building a series of temples and shrines. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), the Taoist culture of Laoshan was even more prosperous, and the Quanzhen Taoist sect was one of the eight main schools of Taoism that developed at Laoshan. Today, the Taoist culture and architecture of Laoshan have become an important part of Chinese Taoist culture, attracting many followers and tourists for visits and pilgrimages. Among them, the Taiqing Palace, the Daxingshan Temple, the Wulong Temple, and the Tianma Mountain Taoist Temple are all important representatives of Laoshan's Taoist culture.

The Story of Richard Wilhelm, a Student in Laoshan, China

Richard Wilhelm was a German sinologist and translator. In 1899, he came to China to study Taoism in Laoshan and during this time, he deepened his knowledge of Chinese culture and Taoist thought. Later, he translated this knowledge into Western languages, greatly contributing to cultural exchanges between China and the West. Richard Wilhelm was born in 1873 in Stuttgart, Germany. His grandfather and father were missionaries, with his father also being a famous theologian and sinologist. This had a great influence on his interest in and pursuit of Chinese culture. He studied philosophy, theology, and sinology at university in Germany. After arriving in China, he taught at Peking University and began to study Chinese culture and philosophy in depth.During his trip to China, Richard Wilhelm came to Laoshan in Shandong province to study the thought and practice methods of Taoism. He stayed in Laoshan for several years, deepening his understanding of Chinese Taoist culture and thought, and meeting some great Taoist masters and monks. During this time, he also learned Chinese and the Laoshan dialect, which allowed him to communicate easily with local residents and be respected and appreciated by them. Learning Taoism and understanding Chinese culture, Richard Wilhelm felt the great difference and difficulty in understanding between Eastern and Western cultures. He studied Chinese classics such as the Yi Jing and Tao Te Ching in depth, translating them into German and English to promote understanding and exchanges between Western and Eastern cultures.Richard Wilhelm passed away in 1930, but the translation works he left behind and his contribution to promoting cultural exchanges between the East and West are still cherished and commemorated today. His traditions and thoughts continue to be perpetuated.

Richard Wilhelm continued to work on Chinese culture and philosophy after returning to Germany, translating into German and English the Chinese classics he had studied and translated during his stay in China, thus disseminating them in the Western world. His works include the Yi Jing, the Tao Te Ching, the Zhou Yi, the Art of War, among others. His most important book is the German translation of Lu Dongbin's Taiyi jinhua zongzhi, which he titled The Secret of the Golden Flower, and which details the principles and methods of meditation. He organized meditation courses and encouraged his students to draw the images they saw during their meditation, which often took the form of golden flowers. Through this book, many scholars have progressed in their thinking and wisdom through meditation, becoming renowned figures in the academic world. For example, Carl Gustav Jung, by learning and practicing the meditation described in The Secret of the Golden Flower, became a renowned psychologist, rivaling Freud. Poli, on the other hand, became one of the founders of quantum physics thanks to his practice of meditation. In Germany, Richard Wilhelm also founded a publishing house called "China Culture Press", which aimed to promote Chinese culture and philosophy. He personally edited and translated many important Chinese classics and documents, which were published and disseminated worldwide. In addition, Richard Wilhelm gave lectures on Chinese culture and philosophy, as well as his experience and achievements in China, throughout Germany. His lectures aroused wide interest and strong reaction from the German population, thus providing a new perspective and channel for understanding Chinese culture and philosophy.Nowadays, meditation has become a global trend, and many scientific studies have proven its significant effect on brain reconstruction and repair, telomerase extension, and the repair of organs and tissues in the human body. Extending telomerase is equivalent to rejuvenation. An American study shows that meditating for 12 minutes a day can reverse aging by 20 years.
